Success Story: Baby Steps

passion
SFEC is part of South Dakota’s Career Coach Pilot Program. Our Career Coaches are chronicling the “wins” that students have in this “Success Story” series:
“I recently found that taking baby steps with someone can feel like a big victory! An adult education student was studying for her GED, but she kept refusing some of the career services that we offer. She had recently moved to Rapid City and was extremely shy. I finally convinced her just to meet SFEC Career Coach, Jan Kappelman. After visiting with the student for a while, Jan found out that she also wanted to find a job. Jan told her that using SDWorks would be her best resource and offered to help her if she'd agree to it. Jan finally just asked her, “Can I come find you next week?”  The student said, “Yes.” When she got back to her classroom, she told an instructor, “I am so relieved. I didn't even know where to start.” Jan and the student just took baby steps that day with each other, but it felt like a giant step towards success!” — Stephenie Rittberger, Adult Education Coordinator, Career Learning Center of the Black Hills
